The wind woke up. As I lay on the lumpy mattress of the motel cottage I could hear palm fronds slapping against the window, and the constant whistle of an 18-knot steady wind. The jalousie shutters allowed me to see the whitecaps on the Atlantic. The day promised to be rough. Welcome to the FloridaKeys. I had dived there many times over the years.

The Keys are a chain of small islands that jut out from the southernmost tip of the US. On the protected northern side, the Gulf of Mexico is located and on the south and eastern sides the Atlantic Ocean. The word "Keys" is an anglicisation from cayo (Replica Breitling Chronomat 01), and this series of coral bumps have long been a refuge for adventurers who want to escape the American mainland, write novels, or fish for gamefish. Since the beginning of scuba-diving, the Keys have been a hub of activity. The low-slung hotels and souvenir shops along Highway 1 have dozens of marinas, shops and dive shops. Conch Republic, a dive shop, and its 46-foot boat Republic Diver are moored at a marina in Islamorada's leeward part. I gave my gear to the Captain and stepped on board for a ride that promised to be rough. We were headed to Molasses Reef. I decided to get kitted up before we reached the breakwater, despite the long trip straight into the stiff wind.
